Policies
Open access: Papers are published open access immediately under CC-BY licence, which means that your paper may be freely shared and distributed, provided that it is appropriately attributed. DuJAL does not charge Author Processing Costs (APCs); these are covered by Anéla, the Dutch Association of Applied Linguistics. However, if you have access to funds for open access publication, Anéla would greatly appreciate it if authors cover a part of the article processing costs, namely €250 excluding VAT. These contributions are used to support sustainable open access of this journal.
Open Science, transparency and pre-registration: DuJAL encourages researchers to pre-register studies when possible, and to make their materials and data FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. DuJAL supports the inclusion of research instruments and data sets upon submission, and can publish these with accepted articles. If authors do not have easy access to GDPR-compliant online data storage options such as DataVerse, the Openjournals environment can provide such storage facilities.
Research ethics: DUJAL adheres to the best practices in the ethics of scholarly publishing stated in the COPE’s (Committee on Publication Ethics) Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for all parties involved: Authors, Reviewers and the Publisher. DuJAL expects fair author attributions, fair treatment of research participants, honest reporting, explicit mention of funding and any potential conflict of interest when submitting the manuscript. If the contribution reports on studies that have been carried out by the authors, the data collection and storage should all be GDPR compliant, unless the research was conducted in a setting in which the GDPR does not apply. If you have questions or concerns regarding research integrity or publishing ethics in this journal, you may contact the editor.
Reviewing: Submissions submitted to DuJAL are subject to double-blind peer review. Each manuscript is assigned to one of the members of the editorial board. We normally seek the advice of two anonymous, knowledgeable external reviewers. Reviewers are asked to consider the following points:
-
- Are the study’s goals well motivated and based on an adequate understanding of the relevant literature?
- Are the data presented in the paper of sufficient quality to warrant publication? Were the methods used sufficiently rigorous and appropriate given the study’s goals?
- Are the study’s conclusions and implications justified given the study’s methods and results?
All submissions are reviewed internally before being sent out for external review. If submissions don’t meet DuJAL’s mission and submissions guidelines or if they are of insufficient quality, they will be rejected prior to review.
