Abstract

Building on Lowie’s contribution to Atkinson et al. (2025), this contribution examines how Complex Dynamic Systems Theory reframes individual differences in SLA/T as emergent, context-sensitive, and non-linear processes. It discusses implications for longitudinal research on learner variability, multilingual classroom attitudes, and technology-enhanced learning, including CALL and generative AI. We argue that variability is meaningful and that group-based and individual longitudinal approaches should be treated as complementary in Applied Linguistics.
